Nasty Nas It Was Written

'The Message' which was produced by the successful production duo called 'Trackmasters'. Nas vividly details the imagery he experienced growing up in the hood. The song has a great beat with some nice DJ scratching. The main hook of the song has vocal samples taken from his song 'New York State of Mind' which featured on the Illmatic album. This was a great way to start the album.

On the second song on the album titled 'Street Dreams', Nas talks about kids growing up in the ghetto and being exposed to the world of making money dealing drugs. Through dealing drugs the kids he describes live a perceived lavish lifestyle one can only dream of but many of the kids do not see the consequences of their actions.

'I Gave You Power' is the next track and is produced by the great DJ Premier. The most interesting thing about this song is that it is spoken from a first person narrative of a gun. Nas has accomplished a unique view of a gun and has given the gun a life of its own - personification at it finest. Each verse of this song describes a stage of life from beginning to end.

'Watch Dem N**S' is a song about trust and watching your back especially from the people who are the closest to you in your own group. The song has Foxy Brown as a guest vocalist on the main hook of the track.

The next track titled 'Take it in Blood' is lyrically complex and has been viewed by many critics as a filler track for the album. Although it is not the strongest track on the album, it still has some great Nas quotes.

'Nas is Coming' is conceptually a great track. It was produced by the great producer Dr Dre and features lyrics that encourage the West and East coast hip hop community to bond in peace. The concept tries to educate fans to stop hating each other and focus more on the love of music.

'Affirmative Action' is a positive track that brings the lyrical talents of a group of artists together including AZ, Cormega, Foxy Brown and Nas himself. The song has strong lyrics about Mob connections and robberies.

The next track titled 'The Set Up' is produced by Havoc and is a deep story about revenge. Lyrically it is a weak track with hardly any great Nas quotes and is seen a filler track on the album. 'Black Girl Lost' is a classic Nas track and is a story about the struggles of a black woman in society.

'Suspect' is a good song where Nas uses his narrative rapping ability that he is known for. His word choice on this track is great as he easily sets the scene for a good story about his life experiences. Nas then tells us about his gang experience in the track 'Shootouts'. This track is a disturbing look into murder. Shootouts is followed by the track 'Live N**A Rap' which is a good track.

The last track on the album is probably the most popular and is titled 'If I Ruled The World'. This song was released as the first single off the album and tells a great story of what Nas would do if he ruled the world. Throughout each verse in the song, Nas describes his dream world where drugs are legal, kids are free to grow up in a safe environment and a world of sexual utopia
